Valley Center Kiwanis Club

Education is the focus of the VC Kiwanis Club, whose 35 members include many administrators and teachers from the school district. "We try to do community service. We try to focus on kids."

This year's officers are

  • President: Rick Roberts
  • President Elect: Lee Rumble
  • Secretary: Charlie Steiner
  • Treasurer: Patric Jewel
says this year's president, Lucy Haines. Other officers are: Ken Kemp, president-elect; Jim Bachman, secretary; Lil Pugh, treasurer; directors, Mark Anderson, Bill Dixon, Max Mitchell, Darrell Carr, Martha Bozulich and Camille Martineau

The club shows its connection to the schools by each month honoring "the classified employee" of the month and by raising money for the school's Read for Life program with events such as the annual "Gala" at St. Stephen's Church. Each year that fete raises about $16,000. It also takes its turn ever few years hosting the Just Say No to Drugs dinner dance, a cooperative effort of several service clubs in VC.

The club also gives a considerable percentage of its revenues directly to the schools, to fund organizations such as the high school Key Club, one of the most active clubs on campus. Recently, the club raised several hundred dollars to benefit a school in Argentina that had sent its principal to Valley Center on an exchange program.

According to the club's only remaining charter member, Ed Phillips, it was founded 14 years ago in the Old Elks Club in Escondido.

A convivial group of people who meet for breakfast, the club members engage in a friendly banter, poke fun at the other service clubs in town, and host various informative speakers. Members pay "happy dollars" and "sad dollars" for various events that happen in their lives.

You will often see members of the club during Bates Nut Farm craft fairs, where the Kiwanis "Nut Brigade" raises money by directing traffic at these popular twice yearly events.

The VC Kiwanis Club meets every Friday, 7 a.m., at VC Community Hall. For more information, write to P.O. Box 173, Valley Center CA, 92082 or phone 749-8406.
