Soroptimists of North CountyThe word “soroptimist” is Greek in origin and means “Best for Women.” Soroptimist International is a global network in 129 countries that includes the local Soroptimists of North County. This local chapter includes members from Escondido, Valley Center and San Marcos, which joined the chapter four years ago. Like the international organization, the North County group is dedicated to serving women and children. Its 23 members meet at Carrow’s Restaurant in Escondido, 7:30 a.m. the fi rst three Wednesdays of the month. Soroptimists of North County works with the city of Escondido on the Halloween Carnival and Breakfast with Santa events. It also has a fellowship link with the Soroptimist Club in Ensenada, Mexico, where it helps three schools by sending school supplies, hospital items, medical items and special things for the children such as clothing and surprises. One of the Soroptimists of North County’s most signifi cant efforts is their scholarship programs. They award scholarships for high school graduates at the end of the year, scholarships for women who are abused and battered, single mothers who are striving to further their education as well as scholarships for women who are continuing their education. In the aftermath of the 2003 Paradise Fire, the Soroptimists produced fund-raisers for fi re victims and was, in fact, the fi rst organization in town to react to the fi re by providing backpacks and school supplies to students who had lost their belongings. Soroptimists of North County holds fund-raisers throughout the year that includes everything from garage sales to its largest fund-raiser, held Oct. 15 at the Bernardo Winery. They also do golf tournaments and Jazz on the Green concerts. Soroptimists of North County is always looking for new members. Women are qualifi ed to join if they have a need and wish to serve the community on a volunteer basis. Although most of the members are businesswomen, that is not a requirement and there are several members who are retired. The club’s board of directors includes President Norma Kellerup, Vice President Colleen Mark, Treasurer Janet Casey and Secretary Marti Tucker. President Norma Kellerup advises, “If you have nowhere else to turn for help, call us, because, even if we can’t help, we know other organizations that we can put you in touch with who can help.” For more information about the organization visit www.soroptimistinternational.org SOROPTIMISTS OF NORTH COUNTY Phone 480-8710.
