For two decades Valley Center Soccer League has provided a
quality recreational and competitive program of this popular sport
for ages 5-15.
The season starts Aug. 1, the first weekend after Labor Days and
runs until the weekend before Thanksgiving, about ten weeks; with
a mid-season tournament. There are usually one or two post-season
tournaments.
The league runs about 50 teams and roughly 600 kids take part.
For the registration fee players provide uniforms and team
pictures.
The teams play on Saturdays at all of the school soccer fields,
including the two at the elementary schools and the one at the
primary school. The older children also play on weekdays.
Because most of the teams are playing recreational soccer,
according to the rules of the California Youth Soccer Association,
no formal standings are kept.
The league does field three competitive traveling teams, who
each play as the Hurricanes. These teams include players ages ten
to 15. They play countywide during the season. The man in charge of
the competitive teams is Ron Smith. Last year these teams did very
well. The boys aged 10-11 team had an undefeated season.
The soccer league has one major fund-raiser during the year, the
Sock Hop in September. This is held at Bates Nut Farm, and,
although called a Sock Hop, often includes Rock & Roll music of
most of the other decades too, not just the 1950s.
Volunteers are always needed for coaching, for the mid-season
tournaments, for the dance, to be team moms, snack bar workers and
to serve as board members. The board meets the second Thursday of
the month at 7 p.m., normally at the teachers' lounge at the lower
elementary school.
