San Diego North County Blue Star Mothers

The San Diego North County Blue Star Mothers are mothers of people serving in the U.S. military or women who want to help make things a little bit easier for folks overseas. They meet the second Saturday of the month, at 9 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building - 230 E. Park Avenue, Escondido.

President Kathryn Hood, a Pauma Valley resident who is the proud mother of a Marine second lieutenant, formed the local chapter last fall. It has 14 members, but is always looking for more.

The organization is part of a national effort that supports veterans and their families, and promotes the patriotic virtues. One way it does that is by sending packages to the troops or to hospitals in places where troops are stationed. They send clothing such as running shorts, flip-flops and T-shirts to wounded soldiers in hospitals while they are waiting for new uniforms to be issued.

It costs $8 per box to send such packages, so donations are welcome. The Mothers would also like to be contacted by others who have a son or daughter in the military who would welcome some support from the home front.
