Rodeo Queen -- Kohlby Rockenmacher

Valley Center Rodeo Queen Kohlby Rockenmacher won her crown at the annual competition held in May, 2006 and became Valley Center’s third young woman to hold this prestigious title.

Kohlby has lived in Valley Center for two years with her mom, Jane Rockenmacher and step dad Alex Expinoza. Kohlby’s mom is a hairdresser who also makes custom Western clothing while her step dad is a communications technician.

A 16 year-old senior at Escondido Charter School, Kohlby’s favorite subjects are science and math. She is an excellent student and that is reflected in her 4.0 GPA. Kohlby plans to go to Palomar College and then transfer to Cal Poly Pomona where she intends to earn a degree in Animal Science, specializing in equine reproduction. Kohlby says that her choice of careers is due to her love of horses. She enjoys being around them so much that she wants to find a career that will allow her to continue her experience in the Arabian horse industry and Cal Poly’s Kellogg Arabian Horse Center will assist her in achieving that goal.

Miss Rockenmacher has been riding since she was eight years old when she discovered horses through a client of her mother’s. “One of my Mom’s clients was taking riding lessons so I decided to try it, and I’ve been hooked ever since,” she says.

Kohlby owns two Arabians that she shows on the Arabian circuit, one quarter horse that she shows on the quarter horse circuit, and a second quarter horse that she uses for barrel racing and ranch work. And there is a bit of ranch work! Kohlby and her family live on a 6.17 acre ranch where they have a show barn and two arenas.

Kohlby became interested in trying out for the Valley Center Rodeo Queen title last year when she was taking a high school course in newspaper production. Her assignment was to write an article about the rodeo queen so she interviewed last year’s winner and learned what the pageant is about and what the contestants had to do in order to compete. Kohlby decided to give it a whirl and the rest, as they say, is history!

“I enjoyed everything about it,” she recalls. “I enjoyed meeting new people and learning things that I didn’t know before. I enjoyed giving my speech and being interviewed as they gave me a way to express how I feel about Valley Center and let me show why I wanted to be their rodeo queen. I love Valley Center and want to help this community in any way I can.”
