Pauma Schools Foundation
Since 1991, when it was formed, the Pauma Schools Foundation has been providing much-needed additional funding for the school in Pauma Valley. Its first president, Mary Louise Coykendall, served in that capacity for four years. Its purpose is to help increase the quality of education for the students of Pauma School.
The foundation has five activities that it does every year:
1) Gives an English dictionary to every student in the eighth grade.
2) Gives awards of $150, $125, $100, $75 and $50 to the five eighth grade students with the highest grade point averages.
3) Donates $250 to every classroom teacher at the beginning of the year to spend on classroom materials.
4) Sends every child in grades K-8 to an educational program of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.
5) Provides funding for music instruction.
The foundation also provides capital funding for various projects. For instance, when its president, Sherman Finger, became concerned that the parking lot of the school was in a dangerous location because classes were located around it, it provided $100,000 to move the lot. It also helped fund a Little League style baseball diamond on the campus and places to play baskeball. When the school built a new multi-purpose room, the foundation provided funding for a stage (complete with a curtain) that could also be used for tap-dancing.
Current president is Sherman Finger. Other board members are Mickey Finger, director Marilyn Foreman, secretary; Byron Foreman, Shirley Strong, Mary Louise Coykendall and Peter Schaefer, directors.
The foundation is a 501-3C charity, which means that your donations to it are tax-deductible. Much of its funding over the years has come from members of the Pauma Valley Country Club.
