Also: Friends of the Library

The San Diego County, Valley Center Branch has for many years been Valley Center's center for books, videotapes, current best sellers, and books on tape. There's even a typewriter for patrons to use.

But the library is also the headquarters for a wealth of programs, especially children's programs.

According to Branch Librarian Sandy Puccio, the library hosts children's programs at least every month, and once a week during the summer when the Summer Read Program is in full swing.

There's also Tales for Tots, which occurs the first Tursday of each month, 11:00 - 11:30am.

The library welcomes volunteers of all kinds, to help bring the richness of the library's resources to the community. "We need readers and grandparents and book readers," says Puccio.

By 1998 at the latest, patrons of the library will be able to "Surf the Net" at no charge (of course, if they are under 18 they will need a permission slip!).

Thanks to a grant, the library staff will be getting fully trained on the Internet, and they will be able to help patrons to navigate this sometimes confusing, but always fascinating medium. But there will also be a volunteer community member who will be fully trained and available to help patrons with the Internet.

The Friends of the Valley Center Library is the very active support group for the library. Through the money that they raise from their twice year fund-raisers, the Friends pay for the bulk of the summer reading program. If it weren't for the Friends there would be many fewer activities for children at the VC branch.

The Friends also bring in current Best Sellers, which are available to VC residents to rent for a nominal charge.

Friends fund-raisers include the book and bake sales, twice a year, and the continuously-running silent book auction.

The Valley Center branch contains about 25,000 books, which includes a very extensive local history section, especially books about local Indian bands.

Petei McHenry has written the "History of Valley Center" using archives available at the library. This book of 253 pages, including pictures, can be ordered through the library. Historical photos of Valley Center can also be purchased for a nominal fee.

Library hours are:

  • Wednesday, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.,
  • Thursday, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
