Dos Valles Garden Club
If there was ever an organization where everyone has a green thumb, it’s the Dos Valles Garden Club, whose 160 members compose one of the most active organizations in town.
Whether its putting on the annual flower show in the spring, or marching in the Western Days as a rake-wielding unit known as The March of Tines, the garden club is a busy group.
Officers include Sandi Lord, president; Shirley Jensen, vice president; Joan Patten, treasurer; Judy Sutton, recording secretary; Jean Kraus, parliamentarian.
The club meets September-June, on the second Tuesday of the month, at noon, at Valley Center Community Hall. They hold greenhouse propagation workshops the first Tuesday of the month,at 9 a.m. at the Gang Ranch. Design workshops are held on the fourth Tuesday, 9 a.m., also at VC Community Hall. The memory garden detail works every third Tuesday, 9 a.m. at Adams Park. Practical workshops take place on the second Tuesday before each general meeting, at 9:30 a.m. Such workshops take up subjects as varied as potting designs and special stepping stones for the garden.
The club gives scholarships every year to students who are planning on making landscaping a career. They also donate to the agriculture programs at the middle and high schools. The scholarships are awarded at the club’s annual picnic, held the first Tuesday of June at Adams Park.
They sponsor a youth group, Dos Valles Ninos, which meets the second Saturday, 10 a.m., usually at Valley Center community center. This group of youngsters learns about growing things through workshops and field trips.
The garden club publishes a monthly newsletter, Chapparal, edited by Joanne Berry.
