Valley Cloggers
The Valley Cloggers introduced themselves to the community during this year's Western Days Parade, when members of the group danced on a flat-bed truck in front of an appreciative audience, and to much applause.
Valley Cloggers is a new organization in Valley Center dedicated to clogging, a form of trational dance that originated in the Appalachian Mountains. According to Diana Logan, the teacher and leader of the group, clogging is sort of a cross between Irish step dancing (you'll know what this is if you're a fan of Riverdance) and tap dancing. You have a different type of shoe that you use for the steps than tap dancing.
"You can do clogging to any kind of music and any kind of beat," says Logan, who has been a Valley Center resident for a couple years now. She has been a clogger since a very young age--when she was taught the steps by her kindergarten teacher--, and has danced on competitive clogging teams.
The main reason to get together to clog is for the fun of it. "We just love to perform," she says of herself and other members of the group. "I'm from Northern California and we used to do our country fair and do any kinds of shows that we could."
The clogging devotes meet once a week on Monday mornings from 8-9am, at a private residence (call the number below for address and directions). But when they get enough members, they hope to meet in the evening at a more public location such as the community hall.
Clogging is for all age groups, and Valley Cloggers is for any skill level--from beginning on up. "we start out beginners getting used to the rhythm of music and then teach them the double steps. It's a very basic thing. You don't need any kind of prior experience," she says.
And don't think that it's just for women! It's a great family activity, and mothers are invited to come and bring their entire family to learn the steps, says Logan. "It's a great form of exercise."
