Boys and Girls Club of Valley Center

Located at the Valley Center Elementary School Lower, the Boys & Girls Club of Valley Center is part of a larger organization known as the Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego County. Veronica Guttierrez is the lead staff person at the Club and is assisted by six other staff members.

The Valley Center Boys and Girls Club offers an array of after school programs as well as indoor and outdoor recreational activities designed to provide positive ways for children to use their after-school time. Homework assistance, arts and crafts classes and computer training are Examples of some of the programs offered from the close of the school day until 6 p.m. They also offer a prevention program called “Smart Moves”, that teaches refusal skills for pre-teens to assist them in avoiding alcohol, tobacco, drugs and pre-teen sex.

Programming at The Valley Center Boys and Girls Club is developed for specific age groups. There are programs for children in grades 1-2, grades 3-8, and grades 6-8. For example, ”The Power Hour” from 3-4 p.m. is designed for 3-8 graders and is a program showing kids fun ways to learn about nutrition and healthy eating habits. “The Power Hour” even includes training on how these kids can cook their own meals!

“The Critical Hour” program targets kids in grades 6-8 and deals with issues that are particularly relevant to that age group, such as peer pressure, how they feel about school, awareness of college and the role a college education might play in their future, etc.

Most of the programming offered at The Valley Center Boys and Girls Club is membership based, which means that they are open to anyone who is a member of the Club. Membership costs $50 per year for individuals and scholarships are offered for those who need them. In addition, The Boys and Girls Club of Greater San Diego has an annual fund-raising auction and several golf tournaments that raise the money needed to support this local club.
