Bell Gardens Farm
Ever since Bell Gardens was established in 1993 by former Taco King and philanthropist Glen Bell, the 115-acre open-air farming laboratory has been a magnet for thousands of children and adults. Recently Bell Gardens became Bell Gardens Farm, a non-profit organization devoted to fostering agricultural education.
Early this year the educationally-oriented produce farm was granted official tax-exempt status as a 501(c)3 public-benefit organizaiton. Its educational programs stress the importance of agriculture and how to preserve our natural resources. Educational programs emphasize the seed-to-harvest process, nutrition awareness, soil management, water concervation, and environmental stewardship.
On any given day you might take a hayride around the farm, board the miniature train, see a deomonstration of adobe brick building, or see how to make art out of gourds.
Comments Executive Director Barbara Karle, "We're really delighted to be a non-profit now. So many people who are eager to team with us will benefit from this. We've already received a tremendous show of support and interest from people who appreciate our mission. We really do believe that raising the awareness of how and why crops are cultivated and harvested impacts our environment, economy, and quality of life."
As a non-profit charitable corporation, Bell Gardens Farm can now partner with individuals, foundations, and corporations to make agricultural education more accessible.
The farm currently raises over 100 varieties of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Every year school buses bring thousands of kids who get hands-on tours given by the farm's education department.
Many of the visitors come from around the country, and some even from distant countries.
