Ten years ago a group of people who had a common interest in art
got together to found a club that would help them cultivate that
interest.
Today, the Valley Center Art Association, with about forty
members, is well on its way to becoming an institution here.
The association began as just a group interested in art. Then
they started to add shows to their program. This year they will
have shows in June and November.
The association meets once a month, on the third Wednesday of
the month, 1:00 - 3:00pm, at a member's home. These meetings include
demonstrations from artists, such as watercolor demos, etc.
Occasionally, the members travel to galleries and have lunch
instead of a meeting. Recently they went to the Escondido Center
for the Arts for one of its exhibits.
The association raises funds through membership dues. They also
ask local businesses to help support the show with contributions of
$10 each, which pays the insurance. They also sell artists' works
at the shows, and greeting and note cards done by local
artists.
They will put on a new type of show in November, a juried show.
Shows currently are judged, but this will be juried first, and it
will be open to the public with higher monetary awards. A juried
show is when you bring in your paintings and the work goes before
a jury, eliminating some works from the final display. The Art
Association members feel that this will ensure that the best
paintings will be shown.
The association also sponsors seminars to get the public
interested in different forms of art. Recently they gave a
demonstration on egg tempera painting and invited the public.
The association has as its members artists in the following
categories: oil and acrylic, watercolor, mixed media and sculpture.
In addition, they are thinking of adding photography.
A Life Drawing Class is held at the Community Hall the first Tuesday of each month (1:00 - 3:00pm).
Maryann Miller comments: "It's a nice
group of people. We get along well and have a lot of fun. There's
very little politics involved and it's just nice to be with people
who are interested in the same thing you are."
