Promoting education for women is the primary goal of Soroptimist International of Ramona, which meets at Denny’s on the first, second and fourth Friday of the month at 7:30 a.m. and on the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Sizzler.
The club was formed 19 years ago and today has 25 members. Its fund raisers include All That Glitters in November. This gala event raises funds that are used to provide transitional housing for women and their children who are escaping an abusive environment.
“We are an international organization of business and professiional women who are dedicated to making a difference in the world,” says Pres. Betty Breer.
The club also takes part in the Children’s Festival in April.
The Soroptimists give out five to seven scholarships each year, for Ramona high school seniors and to women continuing their education.
Projects the club is involved with include transitional housing (see above), Youth Forum, which puts high school youngsters in an educational setting and Girls State, which send high school students to participate in a quasi-state government and learn about politics.
This year’s officers include Betty Breer, president; Sally McKee, treasurer and Karen Bond, director of ways & means.
You can contact the Soroptimists by writing to P.O. Box 1433, Ramona or by calling them at 746-5657.
