The San Vicente Saddle Club has been serving riders inside and outside of the San Diego Country Estates for about a dozen years. Monthly meetings are on the second Wednesday, at 7:30 p.m. at the Rotunda of the Equestrian Center at the SDCE.

The club has about 100 members, about half are members of the San Diego Country Estates Assn., and the others, non-voting members, don't have to belong to the association.

The club generally schedules two rides a month, one on a Saturday and the other on a Sunday. They also hold work parties to work on the trails of the association. Some of these trails were created by the developers of SDCE or were created over the years since then.

Most of the funds raised for the club comes from the raffle held at the monthly meeting. Also, they try to hold a fund-raiser every year. Mrs. Samovar said the club plans to hold another triathlon, which is a race involving a team of three, one on horseback, one on foot, one on a bike. The team has a trail it has to cover in a certain time. The teams go out and whichever one comes back closest to the pre-determined time, wins.

The club has members of all ages, and is open to riders of all degrees of skill. All the trails they ride on are rated, so that people know if the trail is hard or easy or in between.

The club also makes arrangements to go camping three times a year: to Borrego, Manzanita, and every summer they take a week of riding in Cuyamaca. This year's Cuyamaca ride will occur in August.

"We try to keep our members informed of state, local and federal legislation that affects horse owners and the industry, and about new diseases. We have veterinary seminars throughout the year. We help promote any other horse organization that seeks our input. We keep local horse owners informed of decisions of the board of directors of the Estates insofar as it affects horse owners and access to facilities," says Mrs. Samovar.

The saddle club has its annual membership drive in September. Anyone who joins gets the balance of the year and the subsequent year for $20. They publish a monthly newsletter which has everything planned out for the year.
