"For God and Country" is the slogan of the American Legion, an organization which, since the end of World War I, has promoted patriotism and the American way. Members have served in the U.S. Armed Forces during its wars, but didn't necessarily take part in combat overseas.

According to Commander Maurice Chambers, the Ramona branch has met since 1928. Currently it meets in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, but the Legion is looking for a permanent home of its own. The American Legion meets monthly.

Officers are:

  • Commander: Maurice Chambers
  • 1st Vice Commander: Louis Spaulding, Jr 2nd Vice Commander: George LeGrange
  • Adjutant: Patricia Fairchild
  • Financial Officer: Patricia Fairchild
  • Chaplain: Joe Krause
  • Judge Advocate: Louis Spaulding
  • Sergeant at Arms: Wesley Hornbeck

The Ramona American Legion is a service organization that gives award medallions and scholarship awards to school children. It sent a Ramona High School Junior, Chris Ostermann, to attend Boys State in Sacramento in June. This year it plans to give awards to senior ROTC members at the high school. It is also an educational organization that tells students about American history and the part veterans have played in that history.

The Legion also participates in the "Countdown for Homeless Veterans" in June.

"A lot of people don't know what the veterans have done," says Commander Chambers, who himself served in WWII in the Navy.

On patriotic holidays such as Memorial Day and Flag Day, members of the American Legion nationwide put at cemeteries.

Chambers says the local Legion post has plans to become more active and to hold fund-raisers
