The newly rechartered Ramona Lions Club is in its second year of serving the community. The 25 members meet the first and third Tuesday of the month 7 p.m. at Sizzler (4th & Main).

This year's officers:

  • President: Kim Wold
  • Secretary/Tresurer: Dominic Cianciola

According to Armstrong, the number one thrust of Lions International is the eradication of preventable blindness. Locally they concentrate on community support and involvement. This year the club is sponsoring a young woman who is deaf to go to a summer camp for the hearing impaired. It has also provided financial contributions for vision care to several programs. One of them: In His Steps, provided Vision exams and glasses to several needy individuals.

The club supports several programs at Ramona High School. It is working with the commander the high school ROTC to supply new American flags for high school classrooms. This year the club has helped to sponsor the Liftathon to raise money for the RHS football team. It has also donated money to the City of Hope for cancer research.

The club raises money at several annual events. At the Air Fair in June members man a hot dog booth. They run the beer tent during the Ramona Fair and July 4th celebration and take part in the lighting of the community Christmas tree.

One thing that Lions are known for almost universally is White Cane Days, in October, when members give away the tiny white canes in return for donations.

One important thing to remember about the Lions Club is that every cent raised locally goes back to the community. Money to administrate Lions Clubs programs come from the dues paid by members.

Looking ahead, the club is studying other events it can sponsor, such as a weekend-long barbecue and possibly a spaghetti dinner.

It has also launched the Leos, a youth version of the club, for grades 7-12. This group meets at the Ramona Community Church. The Leos are a community service youth organization, and one project they may take on is adopting the maintenance of some manmade watering holes that the U.S. Dept. of Forestry doesn't have the resources to keep up.

With all these projects, Armstrong says the club could use another 20 or so members.
