In His StepsIn His Steps is a social model residential Christian program for people with alcohol and drug problems and life-controlling problems, according to its directory, Robert Denny. Denny, a former alcohol and drug dependent person, has been sober for 15 yeras. He has a drug and alcohol counseling degree. With the help of four churches in town, Denny opened In His Steps in 1995 with six men in the program It has grown steadily since then. Today nine churches contribute toward the program: San Vicente Community Church, First Congregational Church, Hope Vinyard Church, Mount View Community Church, First Christian Curch, St. Mary's Catholic Church, United Methodist Church, Berean Bible Fellowship, and Neighborhood Baptist Church. The progtram aims to get a six-month to one year commitment from the residents, who pay $350 per month rent. There are three mens homes and two women's homes. There are six residents in each home. Once a month residents attend a different church. After the third month Denny asks the residents to get connected with the church of their choice and learn how to be accountable for their actions to the community and the church. Once of Denny's goals is to add a women's graduate home, a sort of halfway house for the program. At the same time, he says, men's to women's beds are out of proportion. "We have a great need for women's facilities," says Denny. Fundraising consists of events such as one planned for May when two San Diego Chargers will conduct a prgram at the performing arts center to discourage young people from drinking and driving. The program also holds an annual silent auction and dinner banquet in December at a different sposor church each time. Denny is the only paid staff person of In His Steps. Assisting him is a dedicated group of volunteers. Most of the house managers are graduates of the program who have stayed to help out and to give back what has been given to them. The 15 classes a week are also taught by volunteers. Most of these classes are Bible studies, although some are directed toward 12 step, Biblically-based programs such as The Most Excellent Way. The men's program is located at 1619 LaBrea St. The women's home is located at 1217 Elm St. You can contact In His Steps by calling 760-788-4716, writing to 1619 LaBrea, Ramona, CA 92065, or by visiting their website at: www.InHisStepsRecovery.com
