Ellie Whitcomb, herself a survivor of cancer, saw that there were very few resources locally
for people who have cancer.
"There was no place where cancer patients could go to get information, referrals, guidance or
help in networking," she recalls.
Thus was born the Ramona Cancer Support Group, which is located in the Ramona Medical
Center, next to the post office.
It's open 10 a.m. - noon and 2 -4 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays and evenings and weekends by
appointment. All of its services are without charge. It provides an extensive library of publications
and pamphlets and puts you in touch with the people who can help you deal with your illness
more effectively.
Mrs. Whitcomb, the CEO notes that the staff at the center is volunteer and that it doesn't take
government money. It does do fund raisers, however. One of these is the annual tea, which started
in a private home and got so big that it's moving to the Ramona Women's Club this year. The tea
and fashion show is normally held in April or May.
The support group also sponsors concerts twice a year, in April and November. The concerts
are produced by Gin Boughner and use local talent.
The group also puts on a health fair annually in October in the medical center courtyard.
The Board of Directors includes: Ellie Whitcomb, Chairman, Fran Gefken, financial officer,
Paul Saunders, secretary. The advisory board includes Marcelo Rivera, H. Keith Merrick, A.H.
Whitcomb, Sharon Anderson, and office manager Debbie Krueger.
