BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB UNITED
Ramona, CA 92065
(760)788-7564

Providing young people in Ramona with quality recreational programs is the mission of the Boys and Girls Club United, Ramona branch.

Last year the Ramona Boys and Girls Club, which provided recreational services to Ramona and the Backcountry, joined forces with the Escondido Boys and Girls Club to form an organization with extensive resources. The board of directors includes members from both clubs. The Ramona branch operates out of Collier Park, at 622 E. Street, in Ramona.

Hours are 2-6:30 p.m. daily during the nine months of school and 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. during the summer. Membership costs $25 a year, and there are scholarships available for children who can’t afford that amount. Chairman of the club’s board of directors is John McGinnis. Chairman-Elect is Tony Ande and Secretary/Treasurer is Margaret Moir. They meet every other month, on the second Wednesday of the month, noon, at the Four Point Sheraton in Rancho Bernardo. Don Ransom, branch director, estimates that 150-200 kids take part in the club’s activities every day, plus a couple of thousand members who participate in the various sports leagues from softball to track sponsored by the club.

The club also sponsors summer day camp and camps over the spring holiday and Christmas holidays. The camps are held at Collier Park where the kids do arts a crafts, participate in sports and play music, in addition to going on field trips. Although there are eight paid staff members, opportunities for volunteers abound. “We’re always looking for someone to do things like teach Tai Chi, or do a class on making baskets or teach the kids how to sew. If anyone in the community has a skill we always encourage them to contact us. We do a little bit of everything here,” says Ransom. Annual fundraisers include the Ramona Golf Tournament in September, which typically draws about 130 participants and takes place at the San Vicente Country Club. All day play is followed by a dinner and awards banquet that night. A similar golf tournament is held for the Borrego Springs club in February.

You can reach the club by calling 788-7564. For board of directors call secretary 789-8203, Lauri Woosley.
