Pegleg Liars Contest
First Saturday
Around April Fools Day, the biggest liars
in the country gather to fabricate tales they
can get away with about Peleg Smith and
his lost gold mine. The contest is held in
memory of Smith who wandered in one day
from the desert with a pocket full of black
rocks. As the story goes, when the black
coating was scraped away with a knife, the
rocks were revealed to be pure gold. |
Borrego Springs Grapefruit Festival
Third week of April
This festival was first held in Borrego in
1990 and celebrates the spring citrus harvest.
Events include live music, dance parties,
a tennis tournament, picnic, youth
games, horseshoe tournament and a classic
car show. |
Borrego Springs Cinco de Mayo
Celebrated close to May 5th on a Saturday.
Specialty dance groups and Mariachis
from Mexico and California perform at an
all day picnic at Christmas Circle Park. Traditional
Mexican food is available. |
Borrego Springs Days Desert Festival
Last week of October
This celebration marks the official kickoff
of the tourism season with events including
a parade, the Miss Borrego Pageant, dances,
carnivals, live music, arts and crafts and
the installation of the honorary mayor of
Borrego Springs. |
