Borrego Springs Senior Center

The Borrego Springs Senior Center has been serving the Borrego area for fifteen years. It is located next to the children’s center on the corner of Circle J and Cahuilla.

Its two primary services are homebound meal delivery (NOT Meals on Wheels!) and the Senior Transportation Van. Both services are provided only on weekdays.

According to director Rosemary Faye, a 95-year old gentleman takes the seniors around town to go shopping, for medical appointments, to the library and for hair appointments. There are two vans available. The service is offered free, although donations are encouraged. The homebound are encouraged to pay only what they can afford.

If you’d like to have a homebound meal delivered to you, or need the services of the van, it’s a good idea to call the center the day before.

Meals are nutritionally balanced and are prepared by Kendall’s Café. About 20 homebound meals are delivered and about ten seniors eat lunch at the center. Meals are served before 1 p.m.

The center is governed by a Board of Directors. Officers this year are Beverly Kuhrts, president; Frank Himmerich, Joan Gustavesen, Nancy Bye, Joan Reitger and Phil Decker. They meet on the second Tuesday of the month, 7 a.m. at Kendall’s Café.

Funding is provided by the Older American Act awarded by the County’s AIS (Aging and Independence Service). However, donations are needed to keep the program going, according to Faye.

The only other source of funding is the bingo games offered on Tuesday nights.

Other activities available at the center are exercise on Tuesday and Friday mornings, movies on Friday after lunch and bridge on Wednesday.

The center also operates a medical loan closet, which Faye believes is the only one of its kind in the county. Seniors can borrow walkers, wheelchairs and commodes.

You can contact the center by calling 767-3116 or by writing them at P.O. Box 1362, Borrego Springs, CA 92004. They are always soliciting customers for their services, as well as donations to make those services possible. The center is a 501(c) 3 tax-deductible organization.
