Borrego Springs Medical Loan Closet
The Medical Loan Closet is an adjunct to the Borrego Springs Senior & Community Center, providing temporary loans of equipment such as wheelchairs, hospital beds, shower benches and bedside commodes to members of the community who need them.
For a community that has as large a population of seniors as Borrego Springs, such a service is invaluable.
“There’s a wide variety of equipment available,” according to General Mgr. Rosemary Fey. In addition to the items mentioned above there’s blood pressure meters, exercise cycles, canes, crutches, walkers, portable oxygen tanks.
To make sure that the item you need is in stock, it’s a good idea to call ahead or to drop by the center so they can show you what’s available. The service is also well-known to area home nursing services, who make use of it.
Obtaining the equipment is easy. You just fill out a form. You do have to be able to pick up the equipment because the center has no way of delivering it to you. And because the service is free to the community, the Medical Loan Closet does accept donations.
Some of the older and less serviceable donations of medical equipment end up going to Mexico to clinics and senior centers in that country.
The Senior Center also has a van that takes patients to the doctor. But its main function is to provide lunches for senior citizens four days a week. It gives them the chance to socialize and interact with other seniors in activities such as Bingo on Tuesday nights, a book discussion group and the quilting group on Tuesdays in the daytime. Meals are provided by the County’s Area Agency on Aging.
